Slightly different from the pre-war models, i believe they were made by George Houghton & sons after the war.

The resonator attaches with 4 small screws into the flange on the post war model, and there is no perch pole inside the pot. The finish on the later models was a thick bright red finish too.

When this uke arrived at the restoration barn it was in a very poor state with a battered fretboard and very worn finish.

I removed the remains of the original finish and polished the hardware. New tuners were fitted and the resonator was repaired. A slight red stain was added before finishing the uke with Tru-oil.
A very pleasing restoration to one of my favourite ukes.
There are 3 or 4 ukes in this endorsed range. This, the deluxe maybe the top of the range model.
Fairly basic uke with standard John Grey hardware fitted.
The pot & resonator have a nice veneer, adding a bit extra above the standard models.
Interesting flange design, razor sharp as usual too! the fretboard is inlaid with markers, and finished with a cream binding which matches the finish on the resonator.
The uke is similar in size and weight to a Dallas-C. Plays well with the usual British uke Woolly tone.
Fairly rare, i haven't seen too many of these around.
Have a look on Ebay and chances are you might find a rare Banjo uke. Even one signed by George himself maybe?
OK, so they are not that rare, but they are highly collectable, and great looking.
Mostly made before the war they are of varied quality, some badly built with high actions and wonky necks.

I have restored a few more Dallas models recently and notice how the manufacture changed at some point during the run. An early model D/1070 i restored, has the neck with attached support pole. Usually on the Dallas instruments inside the pot is a piece of wood slotted in to appear to be attached to the neck, which is simply screwed onto the pot.
This is the strengthing pole i mentioned. Notice the screws where the neck is attached to the thin pot. In the background is the resonator with metal razor sharp flange.

These Gibson ukes are right up there with the best vintage instruments. Made in the 1920's not too many of these come around often.
This uke has travelled around the world I've found, tracing back its ownership over the past 20 years!

This uke arrived with a homemade looking resonator, once removed i immediately noticed the sticker from Andy Eastwood. Dated from 1992, with a vellum fitted in 1996.
A quick email from Andy confirmed this. He also told me he bought it from Sean Moyes.
Two highly regarded players as former owners, a nod to the quality of this instrument.
I bought the uke from NYC from a friend of my Banjolele buddy, John Bianchi.
Its always interesting to trace back where these old ukes have been. Who knows where it was for the other 70 years of its life?

At such a monumental number i thought it was time i started adding some new restoration jobs to the blog.

Ive taken some time away from ukuleles over the past year or so, but recently due to a change in my job i found myself with some time on my hands. Those old ukes gathering dust were soon stripped down in bits in my workspace.

Currently i have around 8 instruments in various stages of restoration, and i will aim to show these during the process.

I also have a couple of cracking banjoleles hanging around that i didnt get around to showing on here.
This model is very ornate with fantastic decal pattern on the resonator. Also the pearloid covered fretboard and headstock. Great for preserving the wood on the fretboard!

The uke is complete with decal around the pot, 3 part neck with binding, a very decorative flange covering the resonator. 16 hooks provides an excellent tone to this very well made instrument.

I wont go into detail on the history of this great model. John Bianchi talks about the SV ukes on his blog here..http://theukaholic.blogspot.co.uk/2011/08/rose.html

As with the other Barrie branded ukes this one is also a George Houghton & Sons model.
Its basically a GH&S Melody Junior. Made in the Uk in the 1950's.

When it came to me it was unplayable. A very badly shaped heel led the uke to look more like a bow and arrow. The action was almost an inch high and the bezel was way up above the pot.

The neck had been attached too high to the pot, i had to drill another hole in the pot and move the neck down around 5mm so it would be level with the skin once the instrument was put back together.

2 large wood screws pulled the neck tight to the pot. Notice the extra hole, thats how far out the neck was!

After i fixed the neck angle all the parts were re-finished to add a bit of shine

Mirror finish on the resonator

A new calf skin vellum was fitted, and the instrument was complete with new tuning pegs.
I believe this to be one of his early models. Based on the classic Gibson ub-2.

14 tension hooks on a very solid, well made pot. The uke is so very well made, a sign of Ron's excellent workmanship, due to him being a retired engineer. It does remind me of my "Ken Timms" instruments. Also excellently engineered.

The tailpiece is not a standard design, looks almost to have been hand crafted.
And the bezel has notches in the top for the hooks to sit. Similar to the Dallas ukes.

Pleasantly chunky 3 piece neck, very thick fretboard. This model has a zero-fret fitted. The tuners are decent quality friction tuners, the same ones usually found on later Dallas-D&E's.

The veneer on the resonator and around the pot is in very good order with a clear grain showing.

Finally the case looks to be original too. Very retro 70's look to it! Red padded velvet lined inside, although its not a snug fit for the uke.
The uke is for sale, and is listed below on Andy Eastwoods's excellent site.
At present I have 4 of these brilliant ukes, and when i looked at them i thought it'd make an interesting post.

There are 4 of them, and each one different. You know that the "crown cut" models had lots of variations in the finish, and the "Wendell Hall" (from now on i shall name WH, as it'll save me about 1000 words!)
had a few subtle distinctions.

They seemed to have different models of tuning pegs used too. Black or White Grover pegs, Eltons, again in different colours. Probably some decent geared pegs went on too.

And the band of inlay around the bottom of the resonator. Ive seen Black & Cream lines. The transfer seems to be the same pattern around the pot, and the peghead decal is the same with the gold writing.

Now on the back of the resonators there are a few that pop up with a lovely transfer on the back of the resonator, or is it inlaid?. The polished up American Walnut looks fantastic as it is.
On one of these ukes i had stripped down the old cracked finish and french polished the back. It looks stunning!

Starting 1st Left,
Sunburst finish, with white Grovers. It had been badly set up.

2nd, My own instrument. i am the second owner, it was bought from new in Chicago. Then after the war it was packed away in excellent condition. Fitted with Black tuners which are the same as on some of the Gibsons, not the common Grovers, but another style. Has a white stripe round the resonator.

3rd, A uke restored by me. it was in terrible shape when i bought it, and it still shows signs of heavy use.
I thought it was like a blank canvas as i had to strip it so far back. so i decided to give it a bit of a custom finish. Obviously gold plated, which i did myself. it looks very good in the flesh. New tuners fitted as it had very battered white Eltons on it. And a Black stripe round it. I'm hoping to get a transfer for the resonator too. The wood was finished with many coats of Tru-oil giving it that great finish, which i prefer.

4th, Another restored by myself. This one is in excellent condition, apart from a tiny bit of transfer missing, it looks perfect. All original chrome, apart from the armrest which has been re-plated.
Black Elton tuners, and a Black stripe round the pot. A fantastic sounding uke!
Gold, Chrome, NickelAs part of my restorations i wanted to learn how to re-plate the metals.

it does involve a lot of effort, certainly more than i realised.

My first one was a gold plated Ludwig, shown previously on my blog.

I am now listed on the gold plating guild, and can offer plating services for Uke repairs in various finishes.
Gold plated with 24k Gold, gives a stunning effect.
A one of a kind special!

I bought this uke and it was in a very poor condition. Some one had given it a coat of varnish with a brush!

The uke was stripped back to the natural wood, and then re-finished in my usual style with Tru-oil. It has a slight shine, and the wood grain is clear to see.

All the metal work was quite tarnished and worn so i decided to gold plate. I'm pretty new to gold plating, and i'd say its not perfect. But it does look very good.

New tuners were fitted, of course i gold plated those too! i even gold plated all the screws to complete the look.
This Ludwig has a black edging round the pot. My other has a white stripe.

Once the calf skin vellum was fitted, the uke went back together. These Ludwig's always fit back together very well. A sign of the quality of construction.

The sound is as clear as any other Ludwig i have played. The fretboard does show some wear, and the decal on the headstock is slightly worn, but i thought it added character leaving it as it is.

A lot of hours work, but a very satisfying uke to restore, and now for sale!
But...i built it from a kit with Chickenbone John at one of his fantastic workshops.

It plays really well, even has a pick-up installed and sounds amazing!

It starts with a roughly cut neck, and a cigar box. The neck has to be fitted into the box.
The electrics are installed, string it up and thats it!!

if you want one, get in touch with John at

The concert scale version. Only bettered by the gold plated UB-5.

Made from Walnut, with inlaid peghead & fretboard. Diamond cut out flange around the resonator.

Quite a heavy uke, probably similar in weight to a Ludwig.

When i received the uke it was in a worn condition, with the expected corrosion to the metal parts. It also had a very high action, which i suspected there might be a problem!

Once the uke was stripped down, i had the hooks & bezel re-plated. The woodwork was polished and given a coat of tru-oil. There were 2 small cracks on the resonator, these were professionally repaired.

These Gibson ukes have an internal tone ring, which sits on top of the pot. Made from solid brass i think, so that was polished up and a new calf skin vellum was fitted.

When i put the uke back together i remembered the high action, and on close inspection i found that the screw which goes into the neck and attaches to the metal pole in the pot was loose.
So i was unable to get a good tight fixing with the neck at the right angle.
Once the screw was fixed tight, i was able to attach the neck to the pot, feed the perch pole through and tighten it enough to set the angle just right.
Some folk shove all sorts of bits down the back of the neck to create an angle. With this high quality, well built Gibson there was no need.
I choose GHS clear strings, and once they went on i could set up the instrument.

Playing the uke is a joy. It has a very clear, crisp tone. As you would expect from a Gibson.
I found that when played gently it brought out the tone even more, but it was also very well suited to playing Formby style. Then it came across very powerfully, but was still clear.

A very satisfying uke to restore, beautifully cut wood, with stunning looks.

Quite possibly the daddy of Banjoleles?

Made by the Slingerland drum company in Chicago, probably between 1920-30.

These are very well made instruments. Made for professionals, they have a great tone. They really have that USA sound. A very underated manufacturer.

i think this is the third one of these i have done. See if you can find the others on the blog!

As for the restoration, i stripped back the old finish (apart from the decal on the headstock, see picture) Then re-finished with tru-oil. The hardware has been re-chromed, new tuners and a nut were needed. Then completed with a calf skin vellum & GHS clear strings.
One of my favourite brand of ukes.

These ukes were made from the 1920's onwards. This one is an early one, confirmed by the wooden dowel wedged in the perchpole.
I have fitted a flatback resonator to complete the look, as i believe this model had a resonator.

Its made from maple, looks to have been stained. I stripped most of the stain away to leave a nice effect of the grain showing through the stain.

Fitted with 16 tension hooks and Gibson UB-1 style shoes. These have been re-chromed, along with the bezel as they were in a poor state when i received it.

Plays very well, nice and comfy to hold, very sweet sounding uke with the right amount of volume.

I fitted new tuners, new vellum & GHS strings
Endorsed by George Formby. This one is numbered E/1300.

The instrument is in excellent condition, so it didnt need much restoring. I took the whole thing apart, cleaned and polished the wood, sonic cleaned the metal parts and then re-assembled.
Fitted with new vellum, bridge & GHS clear strings.

The original tuners work very well, and look as good as new!

The instrument itself plays very well. Has a very clear crisp tone. Its that classic UK Banjolele sound.
Can be very loud, but i find it doesnt need to played too hard, and produces a much better sound when gently strummed.

All the walnut veneer is in excellent shape, one very small scuff on the resonator. I have re-finished it, so it it almost invisible.
The original red velvet lined case is still there too, it is even padded.

Quite often these Dallas ukes pop up with different finishes. i've seen model E's with the flange from a model D, and vice versa.

Here we have a D with a dark finish, and i'm told made from walnut instead of maple too.

Looking at the neck joint the wood does seem different.

I'm sure its not just a maple one painted. the finish round the binding is too neat.

On close examination the uke looks otherwise the same as a regular Maple one.

bit of a mystery really, if anyone has any info, please share it with me.

Its serial number is D/1411. So it was a early pre-war produced instrument.

Does this give any clues?

Who only knows? There are so many stories regarding these Dallas ukes.

One thing i can say, it plays very well and really sounds great. Maybe it is all in the wood?
I bought it from the USA, and i learned a little of its history, which is always great to know bearing in mind these old ukes have been around for 90 years.
Ludwig only made these ukes from the years 1927-30, and the Wendell hall model was the cheaper option from their range, which sold for around $30.

This uke had been bought from new in Chicago in 1930. It was played and enjoyed until its owner left the USA for England as part of the 8th Air Force. The uke was packed away, and upon his return the uke was stored away in its case for the next 65 years!!

Once i received the uke i dismantled it, and polished up all the woodwork. The frets are in fantastic condition, there is very little wear to the fretboard. The metal parts are in good condition, showing only small signs of tarnish, most of which polished off. A new vellum had been fitted recently, so that was one job i didnt need to do!!
I replaced the Elton tuners with a set of vintage Grovers as the Eltons slipped a little.
The uke still has the Ludwig label inside the resonator, and all the original binding, and wendell hall badge on headstock is complete.

One of the best condition Ludwig Wendell hall ukes i have seen, and glad to say it is mine!!
Here is an early Keech model A.
Alvin. D. Keech was credited as the inventor of the banjolele. you can read all about him on the net, so i wont bore you with it here!
This uke arrived to me in a very poor state indeed. The action was about an inch high!, sharp fret ends, tatty old vellum and a worn chipped old finish too.
I started by dismantling the instrument, and stripped off the old finish. The fret ends were fixed with my trusty Dremel.
I re-finished the wood with my usual method, and fitted a new vellum. These ukes are designed so the vellum sits inside the pot on a metal frame, with a flat resonator plate on the back.
I reset the neck angle to give the correct height for the action.
Then fitted new tuners and Aquila strings.
The final result was good, the uke played much better than i thought too. it has a nice tone, and a gentle volume

Probably in the 1950's.
quite basic construction. with a nice engraved flat plate resonator. These ukes were a budget range. Quite similar to the "marvel" branded ukes that GH&S also sold.
This uke was in a very sorry state, it had sat in its owners cupboard for around 20 years. it was badly corroded, and also the pot was warped and looked to have had water damage at some point.
I stripped the wood of its old finish, polished up the metal bits, re finished the wood with Tru-oil, fitted a new vellum, tuners & Aquila strings. its not the best uke i've ever done. but it was capable of a tune by the end.

This uke is the same design as the UB-2. But with inlaid fretboard & peghead, and sunburst paint finish.
Pre-1930 model as it has "the Gibson" rather than just "Gibson"
8 inch rim with 14 nickle plated tension hooks. Fitted with Grover friction tuners.
These ukes are a real joy to play. Very easy to hold, fantastic clear, crisp tone & perfect volume.
This particular uke had been owned from new and was bought it Michigan close to the Gibson factory in Kalamazoo.
It came to me in poor shape, badly corroded metal parts, and worn & pitted finish. The metalwork has been re-chromed,i even re-chromed the flesh ring! All the wood was cleaned and polished. i fitted a new nut made from Corian, and then rebuilt the instrument.
I believe this Gibson range of ukes are right up there with the very best Banjoleles available. Only matched by the Ludwigs.
